Together, the board chairman and I reviewed existing content, new content and discussed ideas for future content. The initial process was one of education, and I explained the idea of content strategy and usability, and how Schoerke's old site was very marketing-centered, and didn't speak to any of the user's goals on the site.
We developed a strategy by which we can bring in new donors and volunteers, and also honor those who have in the past given to the foundation. By featuring a spotlight volunteer, scholar or donor in each of their sections of the site, Schoerke establishes a longer-lasting relationship with those who are already participating, and gives users new to the foundation a taste of how they can make a difference.
One of the technical requirements being an editing system that allows board members to make changes with little technical expertise, I initially picked MojoMotor as the CMS we would be using. After content requirements outgrew what MojoMotor is capable of, I moved the content we had over to ExpressionEngine, which was much more suited for the job.
I am using a few ExpressionEngine plugins to make things easier for Schoerke. Matrix runs all of the slideshows and spotlights, Wygwam allows board members to edit content in a WYSIWYG and SafeCracker (now part of ExpressionEngine) allows all edits to be made on the front-end of the site, without needing to use the control panel whatsoever.
