I put together a layout of what I thought would best be done for the homepage, and the college president loved it. Despising the old website design, I started coding up the new version immediately. It only took a few days to get everything together, and the back-end content management was very small. After the homepage was done, I had to create new sub-page and landing-page templates.
The landing pages are very similar to the homepage, and make use of the same slideshow jQuery plugin, AnythingSlider. The sub-pages make use of a custom jQuery accordion script for expanding and contracting the varying levels of navigation.
The main navigation was one of my larger concerns. The site is so deep, having some pages nearly 10 clicks down, that I wanted to give users more choices up front. Including a mega-menu allows users the ability to look at everything from the homepage, and eliminates the need to click so many times.
All in all, I'm very pleased with the outcome of this redesign. The next step is revamping the way the college does content, and removing some of the unnecessary pages they have out there (over 2,000 in total).
That will be an absolute nightmare.
